Rockingham County Government is reporting that a significant number of tires have been removed from a dump site not far from Reidsville. How many tires? Around 22,000.

The company that removed the tires, Central Carolina Holdings, gave the estimate that 22,000 tires were removed during the Summers Lane tire cleanup contract in Rockingham County.

This tire site had been a nuisance for years, and county officials said it was a fire hazard and mosquito nesting area. There were also concerns about run-off contamination in a local creek that feeds into the Haw River.

Funding from the Tire Tax allowed Rockingham County Government to initially pay for the property to be cleaned up.  The State of North Carolina will reimburse the county for the expense of the cleanup, which is $60,000 from the Scrap Tire Fund.
