46-year-old John Joseph Beckelheimer was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. According to the Danville Police Department, Beckelheimer was issued a summons before he was airlifted to a hospital in Roanoke. He will be arraigned at a later date. The driver of the second vehicle was released from Danville Regional Medical Center.
As Star News reported earlier, the wreck happened at around 3:30 on Monday afternoon on the Route 29 Expressway near Holland Road.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Nissan pickup that was being operated John Joseph Beckelheimer was traveling on the northbound side of Route 29.
A 1999 Ford pickup that was being operated by a 70-year-old Lynchburg man traveling on the southbound side.
The investigation by the Danville Police revealed that the Beckelheimer’s Nissan pickup went across the median and struck the Ford pickup before overturning near the Holland Road overpass.
The Danville Fire Department and Danville Life Saving Crew responded, and both drivers were transported to Danville Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the Nissan, now identified as John Joseph Beckelheimer, was airlifted to Roanoke for further treatment.
The man from Lynchburg who was driving the Ford pickup was released from the hospital after treatment.
